Immaterial Architecture

"Immaterial Architecture" By Jonathan Hill
Routledge | 2006-04-28 | ISBN: 0415363233 | 227 pages | PDF | 3.9 mb
Architecture is expected to be solid, stable and reassuring-physically, socially and psychologically. Bound to each other, the architectural and the material are considered inseparable.
Jonathan Hill, architect and architectural historian, argues that the immaterial is as important to architecture as the material and has as long a history and so Immaterial Architecture explores the often conflicting forces that draw architecture towards either the material or the immaterial. The book discusses the pressures on architecture and the architectural profession to respectively be solid matter and solid practice, and considers concepts that align architecture with the immaterial, such as the superiority of ideas over matter, command of drawing, and design of spaces and surfaces.
Focusing on immaterial architecture as the perceived absence of matter more than the actual absence of matter, Hill devises new means to explore the creativity of the user and the architect. Users decide whether architecture is immaterial, but architects, and any other architectural producers, create material conditions in which that decision can be made. Immaterial Architecture advocates an architecture that fuses the immaterial and the material, and considers its consequences, challenging preconceptions about architecture, its practice, purpose, matter and use.

Architects Without Frontiers: War, Reconstruction and Design Responsibility

Architects Without Frontiers: War, Reconstruction and Design Responsibility
Publisher: Architectural Press | ISBN: 0750668407 | edition 2006 |
Through selected case studies, Charlesworth examines the role of architects, planners, urban designers and landscape architects in three cities following conflict - Beirut, Nicosia and Mostar - three cities where the mental and physical scars of violent conflict still remain. This book expands the traditional role of the architect from 'hero' to 'peacemaker' and discusses how design educators can stretch their wings to encompass the proliferating agendas and sites of civil unrest.

Travel, Space, Architecture

Travel, Space, Architecture

by Jilly Traganou
Hardcover: 352 pages
Publisher: Ashgate (April 1, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0754648273
ISBN-13: 978-0754648277

Book Description
Cultural theorists have, over the past few decades, examined
the role of travel in spatial definition, and have noted its
significance in the constant exchange and interaction between
cultures. Whilst travelling has also been the subject of
architectural research, particularly concerning the work of
internationalist architects of the early 20th Century, deeper
issues of travel, such as mapping, displacement, foreigness
and otherness, have been largely neglected in architectural
theory. This book brings architectural thinking in line with
the cultural theory debates and argues that, rather than
architecture being 'rooted' to place as has traditionally been
asserted, border crossing and cross-cultural encounters have
always been a prevailing paradigm of the spatial conceptualisation,
representation and production of space. It brings together
case studies ranging from those between Japan and Europe in
the period of early modernity, to central Europe and the
Mediterranean within the framework of modern architecture,
and to the USA and the European East in the cold-war era,
unveiling (mis)readings and exchanges that are embedded in
subsequent cultural productions. It also addresses the influence
of globalization on contemporary urban design and architecture,
examining the impact of immigration on metropolitan environments
and the spread of signature architectural practices throughout
the world. In doing so, "Travel, Space, Architecture" promotes
an original understanding of architecture as a practice
concerned with a realm much broader than that of building, and
of the influence of travel on designing and producing spatial
conceptions and forms.
