Public Toilet Design Guidelines
The provision of public toilets is an important community need and right.
In recent years Brisbane City Council has reviewed the criteria for establishing the need, location and design of toilets in public spaces.
This publication identifies what Council considers best practice for the location, construction and refurbishment of public toilets. The guidelines most directly relate to toilets located in stand-alone external situations, however, it also raises relevant issues for interior toilets.
Poorly-located and designed public toilets may be perceived as being unsafe, can attract unintended activities and can be subject to ongoing and expensive vandalism.
The following guidelines present elements that may be used in the design of safer and more durable
public toilets. They illustrate the experience of Council employees. These guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive and should be considered within the context of each location and service need

Theatre Buildings: A Design Guide
The Association of British Theatre Technicians produced its first guide to the design and planning of theatres in 1972. Revised in 1986, it became the standard reference work for anyone involved in building, refurbishing, or creating a performance space. Theatre Buildings – a design guide is its successor.
Written and illustrated by a highly experienced team of international theatre designers and practitioners, it retains the practical approach of the original while extending the scope to take account of the development of new technologies, new forms of presentation, changing expectations, and the economic and social pressures which require every part of the theatre to be as productive as possible.
The book takes the reader through the whole process of planning and designing a theatre. It looks in detail at each area of the building: front of house, auditorium, backstage, and administrative offices. It gives specific guidance on sightlines, acoustics, stage engineering, lighting, sound and video, auditorium and stage formats. Aspects such as catering, conference and education use are also covered.
The information is supplemented by twenty-eight case studies, selected to provide examples which range in size, style and format and to cover new buildings, renovations, conversions, temporary and found space. The studies include Den Norsk, Oslo; The Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis; The Liceu, Barcelona; Les Bouffes du Nord, Paris; The RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford on Avon; and the MTC Theatre in Melbourne. All have plans and sections drawn to 1:500 scale.

How Designers Think: The Design Process Demystified
Published: 2005-11-30 | ISBN: 0750660775 | PDF | 336 pages | 6 MB
How Designers Think is based on Bryan Lawson's many observations of designers at work, interviews with designers and their clients and collaborators. This extended work is the culmination of forty years' research and shows the belief that we all can, and do, design, and that we can learn to design better. The creative mind continues to have the power to surprise and this book aims to nurture and extend this creativity. Neither the earlier editions, nor this book, are intended as authoritative prescriptions of how designers should think but provide helpful advice on how to develop an understanding of design.
In this fourth edition, Bryan Lawson continues to try and understand how designers think, to explore how they might be better educated and to develop techniques to assist them in their task. Some chapters have been revised and three completely new chapters added. The book is now intended to be read in conjunction with What Designers Know which is a companion volume. Some of the ideas previously discussed in the third edition of How Designers Think are now explored more thoroughly in What Designers Know. For the first time this fourth edition works towards a model of designing and the skills that collectively constitute the design process.

The Art of Precast Concrete: Colour, Texture, Expression
2005 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 3764371501 | PDF | 22 MB
As a building material, precast concrete allows a wide range of sculptural forms and design options. By treating the surface in various ways, fascinating textures and fine finishes can be produced. This book provides a systematic overview of the variety of applications for such concrete elements throughout Europe. Author David Bennett provides in-depth information on newly developed, especially lightweight forms of concrete such as GRC (Glass-Fibre Reinforced Concrete), Ductal and CRC (Compact Reinforced Composite). A selection of some 24 projects which are of particular significance, are documented in detail and provide a wealth of inspiring design ideas.
The appendix comprises an overview of the building practices in the individual European countries and the availability of concrete elements. Amongst the buildings documented are the Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh by Enric Miralles Benedetta Tagliabue, the Synagogue in Dresden by Wandel, Hoefer, Lorch + Hirsch, and the Mexican Embassy in Berlin.

Laboratory Design Guide
This is a very readable textbook, on a subject which rarely receives the attention in technical literature which it deserves. Modern laboratories cannot be designed successfully by non-specialist architectural/engineering teams. Even those with experience require guidelines as well as reference to facilities which have proved their worth through successful operation.
The guide is particularly rich in demonstrative examples not only of completed projects involving the Author and other architects, but also of some under construction or at the design stage. The 43 case studies represent a good spread of laboratory design principles and practices. This section, and the associated collection of schematics, details and photographs forms perhaps the most informative part of the book, with equal relevance to general architectural practice and the specialist.

The Handbook of Sustainable Refurbishment: Volume 1: Non-Domestic Buildings
Nick V. Baker, "The Handbook of Sustainable Refurbishment: Volume 1: Non-Domestic Buildings"
Earthscan | 2009 | ISBN: 1844074862 | 190 pages
The refurbishment of existing buildings is a neglected subject within sustainable architecture; attention is usually focused on new buildings. Old buildings can use large amounts of energy and provide poor internal conditions for occupants. They may have high heating demand, poor lighting, poor ventilation, solar penetration and glare, and poor control of heating and cooling. Demolition is an option but the alternative of refurbishment is starting to be seen as more sustainable in terms of architectural value, materials use, neighborhood disruption and waste disposal. Building new is more carbon intensive and carries many wider environmental impacts. In addition, the potential impact of low energy refurbishment is much greater than that for new build since there are many more existing buildings than will be built in the next 10 - 20 years, the period over which many CO2 emission targets apply.
The Handbook of Sustainable Refurbishment: Volume 1: Non-Domestic Buildings offers architects, engineers and a wide range of building professionals practical advice, illustrated by real examples. It moves from principles of sustainable refurbishment to specific design and engineering guidance. It emphasizes the need for an integrated approach by showing how refurbishment measures interact with one and other, and with the occupants, and how performance is ultimately influenced by this interaction.

Recording Studio Design
Focal Press | 2003-03-18 | ISBN: 0240519175 | 613 pages | PDF | 12,9 MB
Philip Newell's comprehensive reference work contains pearls of wisdom which anyone involved in sound recording will want to apply to their own studio design. He discusses the fundamentals of good studio acoustics and monitoring in an exhaustive yet accessible manner.
Recording Studio Design covers the basic principles, their application in practical circumstances, and the reasons for their importance to the daily success of recording studios. All issues are approached from the premise that most readers will be more interested in how these things affect their daily lives rather than wishing to make an in-depth study of pure acoustics. Therefore frequent reference is made to examples of actual studios, their various design problems and solutions.
Because of the importance of good acoustics to the success of most studios, and because of the financial burden which failure may impose, getting things right first time is essential. The advice contained in Recording Studio Design offers workable ways to improve the success rate of any studio, large or small.
*A comprehensive overview of the principles of recording studio design and their practical application
*Improve the potential of your studio with expert advice on design and monitoring
*Complex issues are explained in accessible language and illustrated with examples from actual studios
